What is a Profection Year and How to Use It

Profection years are the years from which you’ve progressed since you were born. For instance, your first profection year happens from age 0 until your first birthday, and that year is ruled by the first house of your chart. Example; you were born an Aquarius rising, so your first year of life would be ruled by the house of the self as well as the planets Saturn and Uranus, who co-rule the sign of Aquarius. 

The ruling house and planet(s) for the profection year one is in bears significance on a person’s focus, growth, and life path throughout that year. However, when their new profection year rolls around on their next birthday, their focus will again shift to the next house and its ruling planets’ energies. So when someone who was born as an Aquarius rising turns 18, they’ll be ruled by their 7th house of Leo, designating the Sun as their planetary ruler for the year, heralding their upcoming lessons around close relationships and integrating aspects of those relationships into the self.

Ruling planets act as guides for the profection year that you are entering. When considering your ruling profection house, look to what planets exist in that house of your natal chart to find other planetary influences that might affect you. If you're in you're 7th house profection year as an 18 year old Aquarius rising, you would look to your birth chart and figure out what other planets will be affecting this year of your life as you "travel through the house." If you have Uranus at 15 degrees of Leo in your 7th house, you might experience some shock or upheaval halfway through your year that impacts your ability to connect to others. This will be a cyclical occurrence that you might get a new perspective on each time you come to that point in your profection cycle.

If you'd like to figure out what house is ruling the profection year you’re currently in, and then cross reference it with your birth chart to see which house it corresponds to. For instance, if you are a Cancer rising, insert cancer into the first house of the map. Pick the age you are on the wheel and discern which house matches the age you are currently. For a 44 year old Cancer rising, they’re going to go through their 9th house profection year ruled by Pisces and their planetary ruler will be both Jupiter and Neptune. That translates into them needing to pay attention to Jupiter and Neptunes’ transits throughout the year as well as embrace opportunities to learn from new experiences and what you dream up.
