A birth chart is a visual compilation of the planets at the inception of one’s journey, meaning a birthdate for living beings, or a date of establishment for conceptual organizations. Using iPhemeris astrology software I pulled the birth chart for Lewiston, Maine, using the town chartering date on February 18th, 1795 as its birthday, and 3:44 pm as an estimated time of mail arrival, delivery, and opening. Below is my interpretation of the birth chart pulled from these parameters. I have studied astrology for upwards of a decade and am currently learning how to use the Placidus system which will be evidenced here. As the signs of each planet are listed and visually represented, I’ll focus on interpreting the most important parts of the birth chart. Also important to note is that astrology helps frame possibilities, each holding also a negatability, traits being two-sided coins.

Lewiston was delivered its official town charter from Massachusetts on February 18th, 1795, meaning that Lewiston does indeed predate Maine’s statehood by 25 years. The mail delivery steamboat had likely traveled from Boston to Portland, then Falmouth, and unloaded its shipment the day before. This was probably sorted to deliver by early the next morning and then tasked to a mail carrier who traveled the 36 miles by stagecoach, estimated at roughly 1 mile per 12 minutes, about a 7.2-hour trip. It’s reasonable to assume an arrival time of later in the afternoon, and considering councils of the period might not have regular work hours but probably would have disbanded around 3 or 4 pm, I put the opening, review, and signage of the charter at 3:44 pm on that day.
Leo Ascendant, 11 degrees
Having an exact time is important to find an accurate rising sign in a birth chart, which is crucial because it sets up the house designations for the rest of the chart. The rising sign, also called the ascendant, is the truest pinpoint of you in your birth chart. Where the Sun is a planet in the sky, the ascendant is the sign coming up over the horizon where the individual is being born (or town is being established as it may be). On 2/18/1795, the sign popping up over the horizon from 2:49 pm until 5:26 pm was Leo, meaning it is quite reasonable to assume a Leo ascendant, especially when compared the with fore and after signs in this placement in relation to this town. The sign of the ascendant also determines the chart ruler, the astral body which some branches of astrology posit is the most important for an individual to pay attention to and possibly the most impactful throughout one’s life. Lewiston’s ruling body happens to be the Sun.
The Sun sign is the one most people are thinking of when they ask which astrological sign to associate you with. The sun lasts about thirty days in each sign, usually switching signs about two-thirds of the way through a Gregorian month. The Sun represents who we perceive ourselves to be, our ego in some senses, and others the personality traits we strive to embody. On Lewiston’s birthday, the Sun was in two signs, which would lead some to call Lewiston a “cusp baby,” alluding to a combination of traits hailing from both signs. Although the Sun was in Aquarius when it rose on that day in the Wabanaki Dawnland, by 10:10 am it had moved into Pisces, meaning this is likely the sign Lewiston was officialized under. Using Placidus chart calculations, Lewiston’s Sun is placed at the beginning of the 8th sign in the chart, yet falls at the very end of the 7th house.
Lewiston’s Chart Ruler: Sun 0 degrees Pisces, 7h
According to this placement, the journey that the town of Lewiston as an establishment will undertake over time will revolve around themes associated with primarily the 7th house: relationships, and creating just dynamics in partnerships. However, because it’s at the very end of the 7th house, the 8th house themes of transformation and shared resources also apply to Lewiston, just slightly more superficially. At 0 degrees, the Sun is just setting out on its journey through Pisces, the last sign in the zodiac and the sign known by traits of cerebral emotionality and connection through the immaterial. People with significant Pisces placements have mastered musical arts, become skillful in predicting the needs of others, and crafted beautiful new creations from tired old items. Lewiston was home to a music hall, intended to be as grand as anything in Boston, which later became the Lewiston District Court. Auburn
Uranus Rx 1 degree Virgo, 2h, opposition to Sun
Lewiston’s Sun aspects three other significant points in the chart. Opposite the Sun on Lewiston’s birthday is Uranus, retrograding on its trek through the sign of Virgo, a sign associated with high standards and critical analysis, sitting at 1 degree in the second house, the domain of personal possessions and values. This can be a challenging aspect, causing tension between the general trajectory Lewiston is taking throughout time and the changes occurring within its city limits. This might manifest as a pronounced social tendency to oppose emotional idyllicism through conservatism, often with the consequence of fundamentally opposing the evolution of the lifepath and identity of the city. Partnerships conducted within Lewiston’s city limits may experience dissonance between visions + goals and practical steps to making them a reality. This could be visible in the popping up of prospective businesses that may live short lives, being mismatched for the needs of the location, or facing tests that shake their dedication.
Sagittarius Vertex, 28 degrees 5h, sextiling Sun
Because the Sun also formed two sextiles, positive aspects which are said to bring ease between the involved points or orbiting bodies, there are bright insights yet to glean from the ruler of Lewiston’s chart. Sextiling the Vertex in Sagittarius, the Sun in Pisces forms a balm to the fated relationships meant to come together through higher learning and exploration. The Vertex represents where the individual of the chart it belongs to can expect to meet fated partnerships and opportunities, and Lewiston’s resides in the house of play, romance, and creativity. As folks in Lewiston gather to learn, create, and connect, they will foster meaning that positively impacts lives through special bursts of connection and enlightenment. In 1855 Lewiston's Maine State Seminary established itself and later became what we now know well as Bates College, one of the top 100 schools in the United States by many accounts for years, and the impressive school campus at the heart of Lewiston's city.
Aries Midheaven, 27 degrees 10h, sextiling Sun, trining Uranus
Also sextiling the Sun is Lewiston’s midheaven in Aries. The midheaven represents the ideal career or image one might put out into the universe, traits to aspire towards, traits admired or revered. When the Sun and the midheaven form a positive aspect, there is a certain ease of aspiration. Aries mid-heaven traits range from bravery and courage to action and leadership. Lewiston has had undeniable ease in meeting its potential to be seen as and rise to these characteristics, seeing its fair share of action and courage. Don't be fooled by the "positive aspect" designation here, it doesn't mean that Lewiston's reputation was meant to be shiny. Instead, it has become widely renowned for moments of impulsivity, recklessness, and volatility, and while nothing can be entirely positive, there has absolutely occurred great bravery and courage here. Lewiston's midheaven not only sextiles the Sun but trines Uranus, further incorporating elements of unpredictability into the dynamic. Lewiston is generally quite reputed for its lively news stories and shocking turns of events, and certainly projects an image of erratic behavior not necessarily out of alignment with the true core of experiences curated here, and definitely not the whole of the picture either.
Pluto 26 degrees Aquarius, 7h, conjunct Sun
The other planet key in Lewiston’s birth chart reading happens to be approaching a return journey. 4 degrees behind Lewiston’s chart ruler, Pluto in Aquarius formed a unique conjunction with the Sun in Pisces, creating a combination of the planets’ energies while in different signs. This dynamic can play out through identity which frequently transforms through the ebbs and flows of connections, heavily dependent on the level of reciprocity in those connections. This lends heavily to the different attitudes Lewiston’s citizens have held towards the town being a key factor in the city’s growth and potential over time. Being the conjunction is split between Aquarius (community) and Pisces (spirituality) energies, there are likely to be many transformations of Lewiston citizens’ interpreted communal identity through the shifts and interactions of the populations within its limits. Lewiston’s history has been marked by periods of immigration from the English, Irish, and Scottish in its initial years, and French-Canadians about a hundred years later, certainly transforming the culture of the town. Over a hundred years later, Lewiston has also become home to beautiful Hispanic and Italian communities as well as refugees from Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and other destabilized countries, who have brightened up the city with their businesses, cultural diversity, and contribution to economic growth for the last 24+ years.
To Summarize
According to this chart rulership and the key aspects affecting it, the growth of Lewiston to be Maine's second most populous town and infamous among the state is no surprise, but Lewiston fulfilling cosmic potential through its journey over time. While the Aries midheaven lends to a certain Lewiston hotheadedness, the Pluto conjunction in the 7th house may cause folks in this locale to feel deeply aware of interpersonal dynamics, even to the extent of subconscious drives and motivations eclipsing the evolution, or evolved traits, of personal identities. Uranus's retrograding opposition in second house Virgo to the chart ruler in Pisces introduces challenge between the progressions Lewiston makes through time with the way residents may desire Lewiston to evolve. And because of the special aspect to the vertex point, Lewiston is a special hub for fated connections, meetings, and happenings, evidenced by its growth and nightlife attraction compared to the outlier cities surrounding.
I would love to continue interpreting Lewiston's birth chart for its birthday next year and focus on some of the other aspects going on within it, but I think that's enough for one post! Thank you for coming along on this journey with me as I dove into some of the potentials outlined by Lewiston’s birth chart! I know I'll have other opportunities to return to this and go deeper with other planets and placements but for now, I’ll be working on creating a profection reading for the city, which is a year ahead prediction/analysis for the city. Please subscribe and join the vibe if you want to read more! Blessed be <3
